Showtime 2007
Well, what a month! Last four weeks, not calendar.
It all started when Centre 70 found that replacing the floors was a lot more problematic than they thought. This forced us to move the WAGS Show to the Regal Centre at very short notice.
I would like to thank Wallingford Town Council’s Julie Sharp for her helpful suggestions and swift responses. And Brian Robbins, of the Short Mat Bowls Club, for changing a fixture to make the Regal Centre available for us to set up on Friday evening. Very helpful people and much appreciated.
The WAGS Committee then faced the task of working out how best to use the facilities at the Regal, which are markedly different to those of Centre 70.
Right, now for the Show itself.
Was it a good Show or a poor Show?
That depends on how you look at it.
Entrants were down from 46 to 36, (22% drop) but 12 of the 36 were first time novices.
Entries were down from 414 to 261, (37% drop) but as usual the standard was high.
This meant that the tables were a little sparse in places and the Judges did not have too much difficulty coming to their decisions. I, and they, would really like to see more competition so that they have a tough task sorting out the winners.
Anyway, there were some new names on the Trophy list this year, which is very pleasing to see, and the Banksian Medal was again won outright without applying RHS rules. Well done to all who took part.
Finally I would like to thank the WAGS Committee, all the helpers and fetchers and carriers, and particularly my sister and family who come and do sterling work in the ‘back room’. The teas were a little more difficult due to the position of the kitchen in relation to the seating, so well done to Barbara and her helpers. A special thanks to George for transporting all the heavy goods back & forth in his van.
So it all worked well in the end and now we are faced with the discussion of ‘which venue should we use in the future?’ We have already had some positive suggestions made on the day. Maybe you, the members, would like to let us know what you think so that we can make a democratic decision. Please drop me a note via the Store, phone 01491 873092 or e-mail wags@bernyn.plus.com if you want to air your view.
