Mick Belson, started work at Oxford University Press as an apprenticed compositor in 1958 and stayed there until he took early retirement in 2001. On the Press is not an autobiography or even an official history of the Printing Division of Oxford University Press. It is a simple narrative describing life at OUP over the last 100 years as seen through the eyes of the people that worked there until the closure in 1989. It is their story, held together by the author’s experiences during a 'roller coaster' of a wonderful journey; one that lasted over 43 years at what is arguably the greatest university press in the world. OUP was filled to the cloisters with wonderful people (both management and workers) and Belson has attempted to capture this mood, the village atmosphere, and the family spirit by recording just some of these sweet memories.
